found a 90 2wd reg 4cyl ranger.guy says it needs a new oil pump.only has 5lbs oil pressure.does it just need a new pump or is it more do you think?and is this a good engine?and what kind of fuel mileage will it get?thanks
You can't spend much on that, who knows what it is. I would be surprised if it's a bad oil pump. If the internals of the oil pump are damaged, then other things in the engine are as well. What does the engine sound like? Is the pressure higher, lower, or the same when the engine is cold or hot? How is he determining it only has 5psi? The engine is a 2.3l Lima series OHC, one of the most durable engines ever to rest between the fenders of a Ranger! Mileage isn't going to set records, but a 2wd should get 23MPG and up if driven properly, my '92 regular cab 5spd gets 27-28 in the summer. Still, I would either pass it up, or do some serious checking and have money set aside for major repairs, low oil pressure is very very seldom an indication of a minor problem!
thanks smitty.says it has lifter noise but thats it.sound rite?i think he said he took it in and thats what they told him but not sure.and motor has 150,xxx miles on it.
I agree with Smitty - if the rest of the truck is clean and straight, and you can get the right price. The lifter noise probably means that they aren't getting enough oil - not usually a bad oil pump, but a sign that the engine needs rebuilt or replaced.
Also get a compression check, if the oil pump is bad may have done other damage as has been stated. For kicks and giggles, lets look at it as buying a truck that needs a motor. Ask yourself, is this truck worth the price knowing it needs a motor, if yes then buy it. If the motor can be fixed your just that much further a head. If not, the 2.3 lima is plentyful, easy to work on. These are durable engines and even if you have to put a motor in it should give you years of good service. On my 4 cylinder ranger with a manual tranny I got around 25 mpg local driving, 29 highway.
