We really need a little more info. on your truck--2wd/4wd, manual/auto, year model, engine, cab configuration.
Just to hazard an initial guess, I'd say you were experiencing Ford's crappy spline lube (or lack of) on the driveshaft joint. You can find fix instructions here: http://www.eurekaboy.com/f250/slipjoint.htm
The tech folders at the beginning of this forum and the superduty/heavyduty forums provide great information about these trucks and the fixes for some of the "common" problems associated with them.
Exactly. Follow the instructions in the link I provided and you'll see that you'll loose a lot of the bump/clunk/jerk you are feeling. It's very very common with these trucks, especially the ones with the long driveshaft like you (and me) have. It takes less than an hour to do. If you still have problems then come back and we'll look elsewhere, but I think that's a lot of what you're feeling. You should also inspect the u-joints while you're there, but I suspect lubing the driveshaft will help tremendously. How many miles on your truck?
npccpartsmanThanks for that link. My truck does the same thing. 06 with 98K on it. I only notice it once in a while. Like if im stopped at a light, and let off the brakes to inch forward then apply the brakes again. Its like a slack in the drive line.
I will try that fix today.
hey partsman, that yolk that supports the splice between the two shafts has a rubber boot in it, I can grabb my shaft and wiggle it up and down in that boot like its worn out. Is it suppose to do that? Been meaning to talk to ford about that, but if someone can save me the trip, Great!
thanks!
Chris
I don't know Chris. That might be something to ask the guys in the Superduty/Heavyduty forum. I'm sure it's come up before. I'd kinda like to know that myself.
Thanks! Never said I know everything about these trucks, Im still learning something new everyday, Just trying to keep an open mind while learning! (And a little teaching from a very smart certain programmer helps too!)
OK, went to grease my slip joint and found that it doesn't look like in the pics at the how to site. My 06 has another u-joint behind the carrier bearing, then the slip joint with the boot covering it. Could this still be the cause of the slack I feel at times in my drive line?
