i have an 86 ranger 2.3L with the toyo-kogyo 5 speed. being thats its used and over 20 years old the owners manual is long gone. what type fluid goes in the tranny? is it 80w or atf?
Atf goes into my 94's M5OD, but I doubt that this helps you out at all. I dont believe that high weights of oil have been used in trannys for quite some time now. Anyone else with a TK5 in their truck want to chime in??
Suprised me that it was Mercon ATF.
Ben, I'm going to drain, and refill this time with mercon [it's low and I don't like the color that is weeping out AT ALL, looks original], but come summer I'm going fully synthetic, when I do the PM.
Far slicker.

I understand what you are saying bazzman, but he has a different tranny all together. I was just pointing out that my tranny takes ATF, and his probably does to. However I'm unsure about anything to do with his tranny being the TK5.
The Mitsubishi takes 80W90, I am pretty sure the Toyo-Kogyo takes 80W90 as well , the M5OD (Mazda) all take Mercon not gear oil. Make sure you check the level in the overdrive as well.

The TK5 takes 80W90. The only trans that calls for ATF is the Mazda M5OD R1.
edit:
Bazzman, what year truck do you have? Are you sure you have an M5OD? The TK4/5 and FM145/146 all take 80w90.
Yes, my '94 is an M5OD, and indeed it took Mercon.
When I drained it the fluid looked anything but red except up on the side of the drain pan. Not a pretty sight, but thankfully there were no metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug, just sludge. Refilling it was a two man job [or in my case me and my owner {wife}]. It quieted the tranny down somewhat. Reinstalling the shiftboots 50mi. down the road worked wonders. No way could I handle that racket for another 400+ mi.
here is the thing that puzzles me, and this information is from the chilton manual. the 4 speed takes sae 80, the fm 145/146 both take the 80w. but the tk5 and the m50d take mercon... what is the difference between the tk4 and tk5 other than O/D, that would make one take 80w and the other take mercon?
not sure of difference but some transmissions switched from gear oil to atf due to bearing failure from to thick of oil.
I have been using royal purple syncromesh in my Ranger 5 speeds and my F150, sems to hold up much better than mercon and is correct viscosity plus has additives for the syncros that mercon doesn't .
