I obtained this donor differential out of a 1990 E-350 heavy duty extended passenger van. I was told it was a dana 70 but I have not been able to find any tages or ID. The cover has 10 bolt holes like a 60 but a bigger cover. Here is the picute of the 70. Any knowledable help0 would be appreciated.
it sure looks like a 70 to me. Right where the axle tubes meet the diff housing or pumpkin, there are flanges just below centerline (as viewed installed in vehicle from the rear) where you should find "70" cast on the right hand side, iirc.
The tag would have been along the left or right side of the inspection cover, underneath two of the ten fasteners, stretching between them. It's almost impossible to notice the tag once a level of surface corrosion occurs like you've got there.
What's under that bracket on the driver's side of the inspection cover?
I will take it apart once the sun and the tempature comes up. I thought the Sterling's were 14 bolt corporate and this was the 70...the only thing that's got me confused is the question of whether it's a Dana 70 U (I don't know what is meant by smooth bottom...my wife used to have one but not my truck)>
