2003 6.0 input please

2003 F-250 CC 4X4 6.0 auto 101,500 miles. Truck started idleing rough and slow. Had local kwik kar change fuel filter. Now truck wont hardly run at all. The owner(a friend) called me today I went over hoping it would be a 7.3. I got the truck to start after cranking several times. It had been setting overnight. The truck would fire once or twice then stop. Once it started it ran very rough. I could mash the pedal and barely get 1000 rpm's. If I pumped the pedal I could get it up to 1500 or so. I couldnt tell if it was getting better with warming up but I only had about five minutes to let it run.

I've worked on lots of 7.3 but dont have any experience with the 6.0. I am trying to help my friend out because he cant really afford to take it to a mechanic if we can fix it. Thanks for the help and any ideas where I should start checking first. Thanks a lot for helping me get pointed in the right direction.

The fuel pump is right underneath the drivers door in the fram. turn the key on and listen to the pump to see if you hear it kicking on, make sure your not hearing injectors or the vac pump. If you don't hear the fuel pump kick on or it sounds kinda weird, DON'T TRY TO MAKE IT RUN!!! you will kill the injectors when you run out of the fuel! Do you see any smoke when you were trying start it?? if you did what color? Anything else you can tell us would be helpful/

What about oil? is he very good at keeping up on oil changes? ask and make very sure that he changes it regularly and make sure he put the oil in that is made for diesels. They won't work well on gas oil.

if the quickie shop used after market fuel filters that could very well be the problem. Use only racor fuel filters under the ford, motorcraft or International brands. Find out what brand they used. Also the filter housings have to be properly seated. Go to the tech folder for the proper way to change the filters. I would do this prior to taking to the dealer.

i ran across one where the engine went into limp mode due to lack of airation in the oil. needed to change oil and clear codes. also i use fram filters in my fleet, as fram manufactures the filters for motorcraft on the 6.0

Injector Stiction (static friction) could be a cause of your troubles. Your problem may be on the oil side. Extended oil changes, wrong filters, filters installed wrong can all contribute. Many feel that synthetic oil is a plus in minimizing this stiction. Also, the flash for inductive heating may help - I believe it is $100 when out of warrantee.
