It's already .060 over

After pulling the front cover of the 292 I just acquired, found the block stamped 060. This is the max bore and I won't sink the money in a block I can't bore smooth. So I guess the only option is to have it sleaved and rebored. Anyone have this done on a y block?

Sleaving and reboring isn`t cheap but if you can`t find a better block you may have to go that way.

It may be in good shape. Have you checked the compression?

Behind the front cover seems like a strange place to stamp the block for the O/S. Have you pulled the heads yet?

Yeah , heads and pan off. Got discouraged when I found the stamp, haven't pulled the pistons and crank yet. Haven't miked the cyls, but the stamp is pretty unmistakeable. Especially since it says 060 298

Well, if the bores aren't tapered "bad", you could do a low-budget rebuild; rings, bearings, oil pump, and gaskets. Could be a great running engine, but I agree, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on the block.

I was reading reading an article in Rod and Custom Mar 2002 and Bob Carlisle of Bob's F-100 rebuilds y-blocks and it said there is so much material in these blocks he has seen some of them bored 0.120 with no problems. It said even if you bore .080 over from the 292's 3.750 it would be the 312's 3.800. I was a little skeptical when I rebuilt my 292 but now I would bore to .080 with no problem if it is a good block.

Have a sonic check done to see how much meat is in the cyl walls.
Most of the older engines had thick metal to try and hold the patterns together.

Alot depends on the block casting numbers. The earlier 56-58 blocks have more "meat" than the 59 and up blocks. If its an ECZ-C block then it IS the same casting as a 312, only machined differently. If it is a ECZ-C then "safley" it can be bored to a 3.830 that is .080 over a 292 or .030 over a 312. They can go more but neeeds to be sonic checked first. I have one on the stand that is a 312 bored .080" so it can be done (3.380").

Well, sleaving is out, $80 per hole. But he says we can go .080 with no problem, as long as we can find rings and pistons

Kevin I assume the 292 crank shaft will still work, but wasn't the 312 crank shaft different?
