Improving MPG on F550
Improving MPG on F550
From what I've read and heard, I can expect about 8mpg from an F550, 7.3L, 6spd. I don't need every bit of the lowend towing power, so I was thinking I could put on much taller tires to see if that can help.
Anyone tried to get better MPG from an F550? Suggestions? Will taller tires make much difference? Anyone run a Gear Vendors unit on an F550? Think they would hold up to the abuse?

Taller tires definitely won't help since it effectively raises (?) your rearend ratio taking away your mechanical advantage. I don't know if the gearvendors will help you or not. I'm not sure that 8mpg from a 550 is bad at all. Do you know any that get significantly better?
No, I don't know of any. Everything I've heard points to about 8mpg, but since I'll be doing a good deal of long distance driving with it I was hoping to squeeze a bit more out of it.
I currently drive an '07 Dodge 3500 and I can get 18mpg under good conditions on the road. I'm planning to sell it to get a cheaper truck, and back to my Ford roots.
But if I'm going to be paying so much more in fuel, it might be better to just stick with my current payments.
