I currently have a 06 F350 4x4 crew lariat 6.0 I'm trying to cutting my payment by trading on a 99 -03 F250 with 7.3 What about the trans. Are the 4sp auto trans any good or will I be replacing every couple of years? I was thinking of going with the 6sp. Its hard to find a crew or supercab long bed with a 6sp 4x4 7.3 with less than 100k miles.
I have almost 140K on my auto... no trouble yet, nor any indication of pending trouble. I am also not heavily modded and do not tow. I'm not sure, though, how much towing the truck did in it's first life with the first owner for the first 114K miles. I see lots of folks in here talking about getting over 200K before rebuilds, espcially if you install something like BTS valve body. The life, ultimtately, though, will depend on the use and abuse it gets.
That said, IIRC, the tranny you have is a bit more solid than the one in the 99-03 models. Also, there is a mechanical diode in the earlier years (not sure what the range is) that has been a historical problem in the auto tranny.

If your 06 was a plain DRW, I might be trying to talk a deal. The tranny doesn't wear out based on years, but it can be a weak link if abused. I've got 90K on mine, and that includes a lot of towing. However, I've got a TC lock up switch, and I never let my auto shift on its own when under the load of towing. I use the manual shift lever and the OD button, and drive it just like a manual. I use the throttle to unload the drive line, make a shift, and gently reapply the throttle.
