A friend of mine is trying to change out the transmission in his Ranger. The engine is a 4.0 but does not know the year of manufacture (Not original), and will need this to match with a transmission. According to him the only numbers on the engine are 20E97- stamped on the block, drivers side toward the rear. Will this help to identify the engine? If not, how will he determine what transmission?
What really needs to be known is what tranny was in there to start with? This info can be found on the safety compliance certification label located on the drivers door (TR = tranny code).

Rockledge, Thank you for posting. You may be right about the year. The information link is very useful. I don't know if the transmissin is original or not, I will check to see.
