We have a 2003 Navigator and there is a hum only when accelerating and not coasting. Seems to be when engine is at lower RPM's too.
We have the infamous rear end clutch pack issue and just had the additive put in and fluid repalced the other day. Helped but no fix. Could the hum be related to the clutch pack?
I have an 03 exp. with the same thing, Makes a humming sound also, especially around 40mph, but take your foot off the gas, it stops also. Does yours make a sound like a tire rubbing the body when you take off from a stop sign and turn.
My 2004 EB 5.4 does the same thing (humming when foot on gas), I just thought it was a trait of the expeditions as my 2003 XLT 5.4 did the exact same thing. I have been trying eliminate most of the cabin sounds lately.
I just adjusted my striker plates so that the door closed tighter, and it has helped with wind noise...now I am noticing wind noise at the front of the window..it is as if the window channel is not sealed completed when the window is closed. Any comments or possible fixes for this??

Sounds like we have the same issues, like many. I read your other post and those folks were correct in pointing you to the clutch plates in the rear differential. You can try replacing the rear fluid and putting the additive in but do it quick before they wear too much.
Mine does the same thing. 04 EB 4x4. Howling at all speeds of acceleration and stops when I let off the gas. I also had the (what sounded like rubbing) when I turned left or right. Added the rear diff modifier and the rubbing noise stopped. However; the howling continued as did the slipping of the rear wheels when the ground was the slightest bit wet. This is a known problem with Ford and its the rear diff. Ford over here is replacing entire rear diff.
I have had the rear differential clutch packs replaced to fix a thumping sound from my rear end of my 99. It happened when I let off the gas though. I have the mystery tire rub sound in mine and cannot figure that out. Anyone know about that problem?
did you add the friction modifier to the rear diff when you changed the fluid? I had the fluid it mine changed also but the rubbing noise did not go away until after the modifier was added. It took about two weeks for it to get in there and make the noise disappear.

Had the fluid changed in the rear diff and didn't notice a great change in what is being called "tire rubbing sound". Glad to hear it takes a little while because the problem seems to be fixed.
The humming from my original post is still there though. For those that had the whole rear diff replaced, what's to say in 30K miles it will not be back again? Seems like chronic problem that replacing parts will only fix temporarily.
Yeah I added the friction modifier. After that did not work I had to have the rear diff clutch packs replaced. They installed an aftermarket differential parts, so I hope someone along the way fixed the original design flaws in the parts. Still have that tire hum problem. Any ideas?
My truck is an 04 and only has 29,000 miles and the diff is bad. The dealer is replacing the entire diff instead of replacing parts, clutch packs, shims, ect... (one of the benefits of being in Germany ) I hope they get it right this time because in 30,000 miles the warranty will be out! Then I will REALLY be pissed. As far as the tire hum goes, it is the tires? Other than that Im not sure. Wheel bearings? They also replaced those in my truck, as well as the transfer case, cruise control, back up sensor and their working on replacing either the entire drivers side seat or find some panel that goes in there as it is shorting out the heater in the seat! I have really had a difficult time with this truck. Have a 98 thats runs great though!
I have an 04 Expedition with 60,000 miles, I have the hum while accelerating and no idea if the previous owner had the additive you guys are mentioning to the rear diff fluid. I do all of my own mechanical work, where could I buy this additive for my vehicle?
Although I will tell you, the modifier only solved the rubbing or grinding noise when turning left or right, it did nothing for the hum. Which I believe is the clutch packs.
