how to pre-load lifters?

I've been reading previous posts on noisy valves and how to adjust the rocker arms, and one person said to make sure that the lifters are "loaded". How to do this? Also, if the nuts are tightened down as far as they will go and there is still play, does that mean that the lifter is bad? Can a longer pushrod be purchased?

Thanks,
David

If your rocker arms are of the non adjustable type 78? or later then you tighten the rocker nut to specs and then collapse the lifter and measure the clearance at the the valve stem. Desired is .125-.175 allowed is .100-.200 and Ford does show .060 shorter and .060 longer push rods.

On this type of head, can it be converted to the adjustable type when it comes to re-build time? Or is it better to keep it the way it is? It would seem that the adjustable type would allow more precise setting while requiring a little more work and that the non-adjustable type is just a manufactoring short cut to save time.
