I'm not sure were to start with this one.
My engine service light is coming on once the truck is warmed up and I give it some gas.
I pulled the code KOEO code 67.
Tried also with the engine running and found nothing.
The code 67 seems to be for the neutral start switch.
I get the idea of this, the thing is at least in my mind this does not seem to be connected to the issue I'm having.
I'm leaning toward the O2 sensor.
Any other suggestions or input would be great.
Thanks,
Andy
The truck actual seems to run great.....well now that I think of it it runs great but then once the engine light starts flickering I would say it runs lean...(sluggish when I give it gas).
When I do the self test I do have the heater on, however doesn't mean that I might not have somehting triggering the aircon. I'll re try with everything shut right off.
At any rate what's your take on the possibility of the O2 sensor??
or possibley a dirty fuel injector, I've read that some guys put some STP injector cleaner in and away they go.
I have to admit the O2 sensor was from a junker. Tried to save a few bucks, maybe when it comes to these kind of things brand new is better.
Okay so I turned the HVAC switch to off. (no heat or air con.)
An sure enough the 67 has gone. Which is good.
Now the only thing is I'm still getting the engin service light.
I'm going to change the O2 sensor with a brand new one.
If anyone has any other ideas let me know.
thanks,
Andy
So I replaced the O2 sensor.
Still getting the Engine serive light coming on when I give it gas.
And after about 5 min of driving it seems to run a little rougher, some hesitation.
Tried pulling codes again and now I get an 11. (system pass)
So no what????
I picked up some fuel injector cleaner maybe I'll give that a go.
Have you checked KOEO (key on engine off) codes also? This will also give you the continuous (memory) codes. If the light comes on while running or driving there should be at least a memory code stored.
One other thing: Doesn't 89 still have both the red ENGINE light and the amber CHECK ENGINE lights? If so, the red one is not related to the EEC system and comes on for low oil pressure and high coolant temperature. Is it possible this is the light you're seeing?

Yes checked the KOEO codes. Nothing thier, this is were I got the 11.
Not sure about the Yellow and red service engine light. I check the owner manual and it certainly doe snot say anything about it.
At any rate I'm getting a yellow service engine light. Which flashes as I give it gas.
I was reading how someone else had a timiing issue which caused the engine light to come on. Seems like a simple solution so, I'll check my timing next and see what happens. After that I guess it's fuel injector cleaner.
I'm getting thier just seem to be taking the long way round.
Pretty common for the EGR valve to fail. Most often the valve's internal diaphragm will become gunked up and cause it to stick in the open or shut position. In your case, it sounds like the valve is sticking in the open position and causing too much exhaust gas to be dumped back into the combustion chamber, this would cause the truck to run bad. A stuck closed valve shouldn't do any harm.
I've just read the text for code 31 and it says PFE or EVP circuit has intermittently failed below minimum voltage of 0.24 volts.
EVP - EGR Valve Position sensor
PFE - Pressure Feedback EGR sensor or circuit
Sounds to me like your EGR sensor is bad. I had this same code when I purchased my truck and I bought a new EGR sensor on ebay for around $40, fixed the problem. On an 89 your EGR sensor should be mounted atop the EGR valve, like this:
I'm not entirely familiar with that design because my truck has two separate components for the valve and the sensor. Perhaps you have to purchase your valve and sensor in one piece. Maybe someone can chime in there...
