Wiper question

Why does my 48 F-68 Canadian (F-2 USA) have only one windshield wiper and can I install a second reasonably easily?

Is there a reasonably priced electric setup that is relatively easy to install and who makes the best set up for these 48-52 trucks?

Thanx

What it will take to install the right side, I dunno.

To answer your first question...

The right side wiper was optional!

BobbyTNM and I had our trucks side-by-side ('49 and '52) to compare the situation for wipers. It seems like if you start with the stock dual-arm vacuum set-up, you can make a bracket and adapt a modern electric motor/gearbox to the linkage. The fresh air vent is an obstacle, and the '49 has a brace that makes it harder, but this is what most of the commercial kits do. There are some that use the British Girling cable-drive system that fits real easily but they are $300 or so. This is my winter project (among many others).

Kusto; I'm using a motor and arms from an s-10 on my 50f1. With a little fabbbbbbing on the arms. Can't use a radio in the dash tho. My radio will be in the overhead console. Just a thought.

Hey Kusto, I'm running a specialty power window wiper setup in my56 and it works great! It's a cable operated sysetm that runs through an aluminum tube. It allows you to install the motor in either kick panel area. It works great! I spent a fortune on my wipers tryin to make something work in the beginning and they never did suit me, then when I installed my a/c unit I lost the pass side wiper. Check them out and see if that wont work for you?

Thanks guys for the info. If anyone has photos or measurements for mounting the electric motor I would greatly appreciate it.

Rusty: It kinda sounds like that may be my best and cheapest option. Let me know of any issues you ran into regarding mounting and functionality. I am not concerned with using the original radio mounting location as I am doing a rod I can fill that area (maybe with gauges) and mount the radio elsewhere.

Kusto,
The 48-50 wipers systems are different than th 51/52 years due to th change in the dash styles. On the 48-50 trucks the passenger side linkage goes through the radio support bracketes. On the 51/52 trucks the radio was mounted lower and the wiper assy is in the middle of the dash.

The passenger side wipers were an option. I've been on the lookout for a decent underdash linkage for mine for awhile now (well, I'm not looking really hard...lol)

Rusty, Do you have any pics of your set up? I'd love to see it or have some info on it

Bobby

Wiper Dilemma

There is another option that all of you have not considered: If the wipers do not have the possibility of touching each other, no linkage is necessary and you can use individual motors for each wiper. You can do this by spacing the wiper position and choosing the size of the wiper arm. A lot of these were made by Bosch and we used them in lots of hot rods like my 5 window Deuce. Old Jeeps also used individual motors......... They are very easy to install as they just are inline with the wiper drive, and no linkage.........I like these better than cable wipers because they have enough power for snow, being directly geared and powered...........

I used the Lucas wiper system that is fitted to many English cars from the 60s and 70s. 2 speed with self park

It sounds like the system that Truxx1956 is using
It was fitted to most British Leyland, Jags and I think Vauxhalls

I got mine from a junk yard (mini), I had to get a new longer drive cable and tubes

I have some pictures I can post in a few days, here is a link to a UK company that sells all the bits

Here's some useful Tech info

alanco: got any pictures, part numbers or suppliers? Not too sure what to look for on the net.

Steve_B: There are a ton of suppliers of similar cable drive systems around here as well, thanks for the info just the same. I would prefer to use something from a wrecker as they generally have a little better pricing.

If you have any old Minis or Jag's in your local wreckers a new cable and tubing are cheap

Good point Steve_B...Jags and minis in this part of the country are a rare find, especially at the local wreckers.

I believe JCWhitney still sells the single-arm electric motors Alanco describes. One problem with them is that they frequently have a switch built-in. I used to have a ****** Utility that used these to replace the hokey OEM system (I called it the "radio tuner" system, pulleys and cables tensioned by a spring).

Steve that maybe something to look into. I still have the 78 Jag that I bought for the IFS and IRS. I'll look at it next time I go out to where it is parked.

Alanco is exactly right, big rigs and such have individual wiper motors and seperate switches. I was on a UPS truck recently and seen that very wiper setup in action! The only down side as I see it is you cant' have them "timed" exactly the same so when one is wherever, the other is not in perfect relationship to it or "mirrored" That may not be a problem for some, maybe I'm just crazy!! But the UP side is they do have ALOT more power and can move snow or heavy rain and all, so it may not be problematic to some??

The setup I'm currently using is very similar to what the MGs had in them, cause I had one of them too. Of course by it not being made by L.U.C.A.S. they aren't intermittent!! You know what they say that LUCAS made the intermittent wipers , intermitent headlights, intermitent horns, etc, LUCAS stands for Leave U Cold And Stranded!
