300 to 351 swap pros and cons
the 351 swap will require new mounts, maybe tranny, worse on gas, but more power. the choice os yours but id stay with the 300 6
- More options for upgrades
351W CON:
- Scrounge perches and mounts
- Scrounge/fab throttle linkage
- Weight - affects front suspension
- Have to throw away the 300
300 PRO:
- Relatively cheap upgrades - cam, intake, exhaust, ignition, carb, about $400 with a little(!) help from ebay
- More power with these upgrades than a stock 351, esp. with smog-era heads
- No fuss with linkage
- No fuss with mounts
- No fuss with suspension
- Good bragging rights
300 CON:
- Comparitively imited cam/intake upgrade choices
- No aftermarket heads
- Not a V8 (I don't know, maybe this should be a "PRO")
I probably sound biased, but I made the decision to go ahead and upgrade my truck's 240 instead of swapping in a mildly-warmed over 351W I already have in my Mustang. Rather, I am selling the 351 after I build a 392 for the car.
If you MUST put a V8 in your truck, instead of a 351W, it would be a lot easier to swap one in from a donor of the same year.
