Ok, I am driving home from a friends house and it is incredibly muddy and as I drive I notice my battery guage is bouncing and my lights keep dimming. I get about 3 miles down the road and I start up a hill. I have the throttle to the floor and I am losing speed. I get about 3/4 up this hill and the truck just stalls. I sit there for a second thinking my alternator just took a crap and so I shut off all electric accessories. I wait like a minute and it fires up. Barely. It runs solid for about a minute and then the battery light comes on and it dies. Check engine light came on too. I wait like 5 minutes and it fires up again no prob and I drove it home. (15 miles) I get home shut it down and let it sit for about 5 minutes and it fires right up again. I took a few puddles fast and got muddy water on the grill/hood and so I thought I maybe got a little water in the air intake. Also my belts were sqeaking really bad after it got started. Any ideas at what this could be? Please help.
If your system voltage drops below 9 volts the ignition will fail. It sounds like the water got into the alternator causing it to quit charging and the other accessories that you had on were dragging the voltage down to a point that your ignition would quit. I had that happen once and everything worked fine after it all dried out.
let the alternator dry out for a while. i have had a problem like yours a few years ago with my dad's old car. he ran through a big puddl really fast and the car stalled bad and wouldn't fire up. a few minutes later it was all good
Thanks guys, that seemed to be the problem. I drove it today and I put about 100 miles on it and not a single thing felt off. I guess my 2x4 4-wheeling days are over. Thanks again.
