Wow! He said that if you used acreage 1/10 the size of New Mexico to grew algae it would supply all of the energy needs for the entire U.S. What's the catch? Why aren't we persuing this asap?

Yeah, pretty amazing stuff. You would need a pretty big investment to close it up to keep other strains of algae from mixing in. But still the energy concentration is terrific!

Water is predicted to be a bigger crisis than oil. He talks about evaporative loss as well as cross species contaminants. That would be a big hurdle to deal with.
Did I hear him say that stagnant, fetid environments are the best for growing the algae?......And 1/10 the size of New Mexico.......Let's just cover New Jersey in algae!!!.....
Its very pie in the sky right now. There isn't technology for extraction and growth on a large scale. There was a TV show detailing this technology, and in it they (begrudgingly) admitted its not viable right now.
From what I've read, the extraction processes are still very inefficient. Also, the algae has to be grown in such a way that the cells contain as many lipids as possible. Usually this requires very carefully monitored growing conditions.
