Pre-Detonation
1. (most likely) The filter was over-oiled when installed, which caused some of the oil to be drawn into the engine. That's not a huge deal except that some of that oil landed on the mafs and now it doesn't sense the airflow correctly. Since the mafs is reading less air than there really is flowing past it, the engine is running lean and therefore ping is prevalent.
2. (somewhat likely) Many people with K&N filters will report slightly better mileage than with stock filter. This is only possible if the engine is running slightly lean. Its possible that the K&N filter changes the way the air flows past the mafs so that it reads less air than there really is even if the mafs isn't coated with oil.
The solution is to clean the K&N and make sure its not over-oiled, then get some mafs cleaner at the parts store and clean the mafs so it can read properly again.
Also the oiled cotton gauze, or oiled foam air filters don't filter as down to as small of a particle size, as Motorcrafts paper filter, so over time you might find yourself having to clean the MAF sensor on a regular basis.
If you live where it's plenty dusty, or sandy, if you aren't already, it might be wise to consider having a oil analisis done on a regular basis, to keep an eye on the silicon (dirt) & aluminim & iron (wear) numbers.
If they beome elevated, for what s normal for your engine & driving conditions, you might want to reconsider your air filter choice.
Just a couple more thoughts for consideration.
