Timing Chain or Gear?

I have a '63 Ford with the 223 6, and in one of my wonderfully specific manuals (yeah, right) it says the engine has timing gears. I realize all I have to do is take off the front cover and check but I really don't want to right now, and seeing as I'm sitting in front of the computer, I figure one of you knows.

I thought only Internationals and older Mercurys had timing gears, and that this engine had a timing chain. Am I wrong? It only has 4 degrees of play. I've been told that's not a bad amount. My only worry is that timing gears would be harder to find than a timing chain. I plan to use it enough to need one or the other sooner or later.

Most all of the inline 6's I've ever torn into (Ford, Chevy, Studebaker) that had cam in block were timing gears, no chain.

I'd think your 223 would be same.

Timing Chain or Gear?

According to an old Motors manual I have the 223 cu in six has a timing chain. The 240 and 300 have a gear driven camshaft.

chickenmanq,
I looked in my Ford Service Manual, and sure enough its a CHAIN.
I would have never guessed; every other six I can think of uses a gear set.
One more thing to worry 'bout....
Brett
