I've had em all.
Flathead 250 "Spitfire" Chrysler
170 225 slant 6,
223 Ford,
194 216 230 250 Chevy,
258 4.0 AMC, and 200 Nissan turbo diesel in a IH Scout.
I never did like the slant six as much as most people. I thought the old flathead Spitfire was much better. I know have a 4.0 jeep and a 4.9 Ford. These engines are much better than any of those I listed before. There are many examples of these engines running over 300k miles. The EFI systems really helped as the major problem with old sixes was fuel distribution. I favor the ford slightly for the low end torque but love the jeep above 3000rpm. Both of these engines were designed in the mid sixties as a response to the slant six and chevys redesigned 6 and were out of production by 2001.
Tower of Torque 300

As far as I know, Jeep used the 4.0L Inline Six up until this current model year. I think they still put it in a few of their models, but have "officially" discontinued use.
IMO, it's just one of MANY bad decisions made by Chrysler in the past 20 years. That engine was almost as bullet-proof as the Ford 300-I6.

I think that Chrysler called their 225cid 2bbl a Super Six. It also came with hydraulic valve lifters. My Dad's Aspen had one. My AMC had a 258 2bbl that was faster and got a little better mileage.
I stand corrected on the 4.0l production end, I forgot about how many models that engine was in.
