Hey folks,
help me out please.....
The truck has never missed a beat, started in any weather as quick as you'd turn the key. I ordered a Chilton repair manual to help with changing the clutch. The book got here yesterday and today, I started the truck and pulled it out of the driveway to park on the street. Was reaching for the key to shut it off and it went off itself and won't start again. When I turn on the key,I hear what I think is the fuel pump for a second. It cranks, but won't start.
Of course, the book I got doesn't have a troublesooting section.
Any idea what could have happened so quick. It started up normal and drove normal, just shut off. Sure hope there is a quick fix, I need the truck real bad this weekend.
.....just had this same kind of an experience last month..........figured out that when i did a tune up and all, even changed over to MSD ignition part's from Summit >>>>>>Ran for a week clean & nice, then behind & waiting on School Bus in front of me, truck just quit ! ! >>>>>>> dang if it wasn't that NEW Electronic MSD_Coil.........found out by sticking a screw driver into any one of the plug wires and laid against the block and seen NO spark when trying to crank up to start.......... got back the stock coil and changed back over ^^^^^^ bing^^^^ fired right up ! ! ! called Summit about's, they said it was under THEIR 60 day guarrantee, just send it back a they would refund OR send replacement PLUS sent me a check for the return shipping I paid to ship back ! ! ! { GREAT SERVICE & all from them ! ! I now got the replacement in it....+ the check for the return shipping i paid for }, BUT, back on subject here, like i said my prob was the coil died.........check for spark and see if your's is Hopefully that easy of prob & fix.........
just got some daylght. I hear the fuel pumps (don't have a gauge nor know where to check pressure) and I checked that I (and I do) have power going to the coil. Pulled a plug wire and no spark. I'm waiting now on a roadside service to come check it out but not sure if the guy will be able to work on the truck. There is a garage close by that works on American vehicles, but the guy is a crook. Any other tests that I can do? Does the vehicle have to run in order to pull codes. Is there a code that'll say "this is why it won't start" (at least something dummy proof)?
Thanks, Dave
Enjoy your Turkey. I'll be eating mine when you folks start thinking about cooking.
You don't need to have a running truck to check for codes. With a KOEO test the computer will test all the sensors that it can and report its findings, and will also report and continuous memory codes that got stored during the actual operation of the truck. If the problem you're having doesn't fall into one of these two categories then it won't check for it Try pulling the codes. If you've got power coming into the coil but non at the plugs then you probably have a bad coil.
Going to pull codes after while. One thing that I noticed and don't remember seeing before (doesn't mean that it wasn't there). Between the check engine and battery light, is a red "engine" light that stays on while the key is on. Mean aything?
Also, the service guy was here and unable to do anything. He did say that there was power everywhere that it should be, but no spark. Could the coil have gone just like that, with no warning?
And, assuming that the coil is bad, I've found several ranging from 12- 60 bucks and all look the same. Is there something that I need to pay attention to?
I'm currently using an MSD Blaster coil and have had no problems with it. Paid somewhere around $40-50 for it at the local parts store. Get a brand name that you can trust like MSD or FMC
So far, I only find Standard Motor Products and AC Delco. A lot of places won't ship to a PO box, which is what my address is. I'll keep checking though.
We only have one place that sells them here. I called them but they want about 180 bucks. Hard to find American car parts in Germany. That's why I'm stuck w/ mail order.
No.
The ECT just tells you that the engine was not warmed up before the test.
The ACT just tells you that the Ambient temperature was below 10°C (50°F).
