30% tint lets 30% of light through. Most vehicles today come with a 70% tint from the factory. While what I said wasn't technically correct, it was accurate for most cars.

Actually, according to NY State law and 3M who manufactures most of the film out there the only way to measure window tint is by percent transmittance (and a lot of State Police carry the meters to measure it - they only cost about a hundred bucks). I shouldn't have referred to a 30% tint. What I should have said is a film that blocks 30% of the light and allows 70% through. That's not very dark. 3M makes a popular line of tint films that come in 8%, 16%, 38% and 51% transmittance. None would be legal in NY for the front side or windshield glass.
