The first thing I thought when I picked my truck up is that it didn't have he "brake/steering" problem like my 04 had and other fords w/ hydroboost. However, the pump was noisy when cold, so I replaced it. Now I had the problem. Tried another pump and the same problem. So I think that whatever specs it was rebuilt to may be marginal. I would say a pump, or even the agr pump, would fix the problem. Wish I hadn't changed mine, only made noise for a little bit, but the steering worked perfectly all the time!
You know something very similar used to happen on my truck. Its a '96 F-250. The problem wasn't the power steering, it was something in the steering wheel itself, I'm not sure what but the Mechanic fixed it. I remember at times my steering wheel would physically feel loose and it would randomly become very hard to steer.
Thanks to all that took time to reply! Sounds like I will just keep a close eye on it and maybe get a new power steering pump! As long as it is moving, it does not do this, only when your foot is on the brake. Now it still feels "thick", but does still turn while rolling slow into a parking space, but put on the brake and it gets really thick feelling and when you stop it won't turn AT ALL!! We have a 1999 ford F350 diesel with 150000 miles and it has never done this. Is it the newer year or the four wheel drive that may be causing the overload?
Neither. Some do it worse than others. Pavement, tire, weight, wind, who knows. It gets really "thick" because the brakes are using the assist from the pump, so there is less available to turn the wheels under the heavy truck!
So, do we just deal with it until it gets worse or do we change the pump now? We don't have a lot of money left over after buying it, but if it is dangerous we will put a pump on it, (I like the idea of the bigger pump somone put on here) but if it will just get worse and worse but still be OK, then we will deal with it for awhile! Sounds like a lot of you have had this problem, and changing the pump didn't really help you much! Is that a fair statement?
For the record, we REALLY like the truck! My daughter is in 7th heaven! lol
It sounds like they put a factory pump on, I would try the upgrade. That should fix it. When mine dies I'll buy the upgraded pump and not waste my time with the sometimes weak factory pump. I haven't priced the factory pump yet, but the AGR looks like the way to go . If its to hard to steer I would think its starting to get dangerous, why wait until something happens.
I think I'd stay away from a rebuilt pump too. Too mant people have this problem and you may just get somebodies rebuilt already "bad" pump. Then you may be steered (no pun intended) away from the real problem.
I would stay away from AGR....far too many people on different boards have has QC issues with their stuff, hell I know some shop owners who refuse to run/install their stuff now.
For an aftermarket pump look into PSC Motorsports.
And you can upgrade the Hydroboost as well to a Vanco setup which will also helpout.

Thanks for the help! Where would I find information on the Vanco setup and the PSC Motorsports? Would I need both?
This is for your 17 year old daughter, get the pump!! Dont want to sound like an azzzz and I am sure you just dumped a load of $$ buying the truck but dont take a chance. Loss of steering or braking control could be catastrophic!! Life is fragile handle with care.

I have no problem buying the pump if it will fix the problem!! Again, this only happens at very low speed trying to get in or out of a tight spot with your foot on the brake!
