Which is the better intake

Guys, which 4bbl intake is better, the Offenhauser or the Clifford? I just want to get some more hp out of 300.

The Clifford, so I hear, is better 'cause it is designed for the 300. The Offy uses v-8 tech and the 300's don't like it all that well.

John, whoever told you that was either A) working for clifford or B) didn't have his head on straight. The Offy dual port is by far a better intake on a stock engine, and is good for building low end torque. On a modified engine, the Offy C-Series and Clifford non-heated manifold are about the same, BUT, you can use an Offy intake with a stock exhaust manifold, the difference between them would probably only be noticed on an all out race application, where you would be wanting multiple carburation anyway.... The Clifford Water Heated manifold is VERY good for those in colder climates like myself, but, the cost of it makes it easy for me to decide to get the Offy C-Series, run it with the header in the summer, and go to the stock exhaust manifold in the winter.....

The Offy C-series, is that the same as the manifold shown in JC Whitney? Thats the only parts catalog I have that show or advertises the Offenhauser intake. Where else could a guy find one? What size carb would you run on it? Thanks for all the help.

Re: link to www.jegs.com.
Hey, thanks for the info! I emailed Edelbrock recently and they told me to go to Clifford for my 4-bbl 4.9l manifold. Clifford wants almost $400.00 US! Yikes! Being a Canuck and converting $$, it's like I DON'T THINK SO!

in all honesty i beleive the offy 360 degree i have on my f150 is the best. The intake runners are divided into 2 levels. The primaries run through one set of chambers/runners and the secondaries another set which gives it 2 different air charges. So the second one which is farther from the exhaust is a cooler denser charge which helps when you kick in the old 4s. I would also say when they tell you 390cfm its to small. I have ran both holley and edelbrock 600s on mine with no problems outta the box and proper tuning makes em even better. Clifford has some great technology but they sure are pricey. I use a comp cam this one.

Ford High energy camshafts, Hydraulic--Moderate performance for 300ci. Strong in mid range rpm. Noticeable idle.
operating rpm range : 1200-5200
duration in degrees : advertised in.:268 advertised ex.:268 @.050" in.:218 @.050" ex.:218
lift w/ rocker arms :1.6 rocker arms in:.456", ex:.456"

Its available on racesearch.com for $127 and a pacesetter header from summitracing.com that has dual outlets for true dual exhaustand this engine still surprises me. If i would have went with better pistons and some head work it would have really screamed.

Good Luck Andy

Clifford's prices just skyrocketed a month or so ago. Basically $800 for the water heated intake and header.

Which is the better intake

Find a good machinist, have him chop the top off of the stock manifold and weld on a flange for a motorcraft 2 bbl carb that is used on the 1970's 351's. I have a friend who did this (he's the machinist) to his I6 and he uses the motor in a 1 ton dually that tows a 20,000lb trailer. He can fully load both truck and trailer and still out-pull the big Chevys and Dodges up some of our steeper mountain passes (Washington State.) It's not as pretty as the Offy or the clifford, but it makes more power due to better velocity. i asked him the same question and he said that he'd just make me an intake for my 300. Our next experiment is to take a later model FI intake and weld on a flange for a Weber 44 DCOE sidedraft carb. Those are damn fine carbs when it comes to getting my truck sideways out on the rocks. Rarely stall, if ever. ...now it's just a matter of time & MONEY...

I don't see why you'd get better velocities on the log intake than an offy DP with only the primaries opened. A DP with a 390 will give you a perfect lowend with no soggyness that can happen in a larger carb. The only way you're getting more mix velocity is to have a smaller intake, which the stocker is small.... But on a DP the small side is going to be alot smaller than the stocker, for that super lowend... And when your vacuum gets above that set by your vacuum secondaries, it'll open those secondaries (however much you want, set by tune) and still keep up the velocities. And if you still want a small 2bbl on there instead of a small 4bbl, a 2bbl should be able to be placed on a DP so as to keep the primary and secondary separated.

I'm not saying that is a pure lie, because I have no idea. I just know i'll have a hugely difficult time believing it unless there are some dyno numbers posted. Or a better reason for this than velocity.....
