I own a 1986 f-150,with 300 inline 6 4 speed manual. I have the feedback carb system. My problem is that the truck will run at idle but when I put the pedel to it it stumbles and never achieves 2500 rpm. I was wondering if there was a way to test to see if the pcm was getting the signal to advance the timing, or sending the signal. It feels and sounds like it's not advancing. I read that the map sensor was involved in timing, also the o2 sensor and the tps. I put a timing light on it and un hooked the spout I noticed no timing mark no change spout hooked or unhooked. I would like some help troubleshooting this problem. I appreaciate in advance any suggestion or direction.I also own 1980 f-100 300 inline and was wondering how big a job to put the duraspark 2 ign. in the 86 along with carb,I have the dist.w/vac adv. what to do w/ pcm if I make change.Haynes book was not a great help. zantar
I won't be able to help with your specific problem but I can tell you how to get the timing right.
I have an '85 with feedback and when I went to time it, there was no timing mark anywhere. Actually it was on the wrong side of the engine. I guess the mark on the dampener slips.
Here is how I timed mine:
1. Pull all of the plugs out of the engine so you can easily turn over the engine by hand.
2. Put your thumb over the #1 plug hole and rotate the engine via the crank bolt until you bring the piston up to TDC on the compression stroke. I used a long wooden dowel in the plug hole once I felt the compression. This helps you find TDC.
3. Once at TDC mark the pulley with chalk or white paint at 0 degrees TDC.
4. Put all the plugs back in and pull apart the spout connector.
5. Warm up the truck and time to, I think it's 10 degress BTDC.
