2001 crew cab. In reading about boost leaks I checked around. Folks have discussed 'spider pipe' which I assume is the 5 headed monster in front of the turbo. The bottom two 'legs' of this that go down to the engine are covered with oily sute / blackness. The rest of the valve covers etc...are clean, only around these connections is a mess. They look like rubber boots similar to the ones up on the cold/hot side IC pipes.
What are these connections called? Is this a potential boost leak spot? What parts are needed to resolve and is it a fairly easy job for a fairly novice person like myself.
You already called it....boots. The blue ones are the intercooler boots and the orange ones are the intake boots, or turbo manifold boots if you prefer.
Read about the ccv mod....it will take care of the oil.
Yeah...the orange intake boots. That the ones. So..the oily mess isn't a sign of a boost leak...just a sign that I need to do the CCV mod. The potential for having a boost leak was the point of the question.
So...while we're on the topic...other then being cleaner in this area what does the CCV mod give me?
You may still have a boost leak. The CCV will eliminate the crankcase vapors in the intake tract. Keep in mind, any oil or fuel leak at the front of the engine will blow back to the spider boots. Also, a turbo pedestal or oring leak can dribble down. First cure is to remove all the boots and clean them up good. Do the ccv and the make sure the valley is clean. Then look for an oil leak. I recommend Simple Green and good rinse before any disassembly.
Clean engine = happy engine and much easier to find source of leaks.
I do have guages but this is a new truck for me...so no history.
Have another thread going about boost levels but...I get max 11-12 with wastegate red line ON and I get max 15-16 with it OFF. I have a stock truck....maybe I have no leaks, maybe truck will only produce 16 PSI stock, maybe guage is off by a few lbs. Not sure. Don't see any obvious leaks (sute etc) anywhere.
Where is your boost measured from, MAP line or digital, those are low stock #'s, I think you should have max boost of 17-20 with the wastgate connected The weird thing is that boost the red line shouldn't make a diff at those pressures

Yeah..that is what I thought. Wastegate is there to limit boost at the top right? Thats where I was thinking my guage just might be wrong and I am getting bost significantly higher than my guage is reading....hence the difference when I take off the red wire.
Guage is not digital....seems to be teed in to MAP line. Thought about getting digital (Edge monitor) anyway. Do these read boost from the computer and therefore more accurate than whomever installed / wherever the current guage is installed.
