I am still trying to dial in my timing on my 96 F150 300/6. The manual says to check the emission sticker for base timing. My sticker says base timing is not adjustable. I had to find TDC on the #1 piston and remark the timing marks. The timing marks were quite a bit off.
I had heard that it should be set at 10BTDC and to go up to 14BTDC for more power. Does anyone have any information on this?
You have to remove the SPOUT connecter before you check or adjust the ignition timing , The SPOUT is located over on the left inner fender area & should be taped to the wiring harness that goes to the TFI Module . Remove the little square plastic plug , its usually gray or black . Now the actual timing mark on the crank pulley is just a small slash mark , its is not the big notch . Another thing too is that the ignition timing on the 300 does not very much over time . Because that engine uses gears on the cam & crank Vs a timing chain it wears & lasts much longer , Unless the distributor has been moved I would bet the timing is still within specs . My info says the ignition timing should be 10 Deg BTDC , + or - 2 Deg .
Thanks for the information, Paul. I was aware of the spout connector drill. I had driven it for three years thinking all was good. I decided to check the timing and even though the marks didn't match just setting by ear made a remarkable difference. I put #1 piston on TDC and had to remark the timing mark. It was off about 2 inches. Anyway I am real close and just want it to be perfect. Thanks again.
i adjusted the timing on my 95 to 14 degree's with no problems yet. i have heard that some of these engines adjust well to it and some don't. like Paul said its the small slash on the crank pulley not the big notch. the timing scale on mine was on the passenger side of the engine. took me a few minutes to find everything. all i could see was the big notch on the crank pulley and a single mark on the driver side of the engine on the front cover. when i went to check it nothing lined up. so i went under the front of the truck to take a closer look at the crank pulley to find a small slash and marked it with tire chalk. then i found the scale on the other side of the crank pulley. checked it again and everything lined up perfect. did the same thing to my brother's truck (95 F-150 4x4 flareside 5.8L with the offroad package) his was a little different. the degree's were marked on the crank pulley itself. if you advance timing and the engine pings under load turn it back(obviously). mine didn't ping at 14BTDC, his did. 2 completely different engines but i have heard of some of the sixes ping at 14BTDC.
