I have a 2003 6.0 excursion with the rectangular paper air filter. I understand that the big oval one is a very good filter. What about this thing? Would aftermarket be better?

Not at all. It is a black plastic box with the word visteon across the top. It looks like it could be OEM but it is not what the book calls for. I bought the big oval blue one like you showed in the picture. I just bought this vehicle a week or so ago maybe two and am new to Fords, Excursions and Diesels. I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right as I have read on this site. Any help is appreciated.
No, I'm very sure of the 6.o engine and that is not the filter or box either. It looks kind of like the A/F listing for vans o fhat year. Diesel filter page has a picture of a rectangular paper type filter for the vans. It is a different part number as well.
It's possible that it's had an A/M filter put in it that looks very similar to that of the 7.3 diesel. You might drop by your dealership parts department and have them take a look to see if they can tell you what you've really got or post a picture up and let us look.
Thanks, will give it a try. What does everyone that changes to A/M air intakes and filters do with the OEM one? Some of the guys at work have done this and they may have the old one laying around.
After I investigated this further it appears someone (prior owner) deleted the OEM filter and box and installed a complete set up from WIX. They sell a whole box and a separate filter that is paper. Part numbers are as follows
Housing # 24490
Filter# 49490
I think the OEM would be better even though they say this is an acceptable replacement. Anybody have any experience or expertise on this?

Get rid of the A/M Wix replacement, it is a major step backwards. Get yourself an OEM Donaldson unit.
about the filters use only donaldson or can i use k and n? will it hurt engine? give me and gains?
also should the air filter be changed/checked regualrly or when the indicator tells us to??
Stay far away from K&N as they are about the worst filter choice for a PSD.
Use only the OEM Donaldson filters, as they provided the best filtration on the market and flow more air than the 6.0 can use until you reach 500+RWHP. Change the filter based on the "filter minder" on the filter housing. The OEM Donaldson filter can hold over 3lbs of dirt and can last upwards of 80k miles.
