Hope I can get a little bit of help and a lot of advise from the forum. I have a '96 Explorer XLT 4WD, 4.0 L V-6, that was diagnosed with the P0125 error code from the ODBII PCM. I bought the replacement thermostat, but am not sure which device is the ECT sensor? In looking at the assembly there is a Coolant Temperature Sending Unit, looks like a switch only, and there is a EEC-iV coolant temperature sending unit, that appears to the the thermistor or similar device. Which one in this case, if not both , would generate the P0125 error?
I'm thinking about just replacing the thermostat, and taking a chance, but since I've got it apart, should I go ahead and replace the ECTsensor(s)?
THanks for your help and thanks for the Explorer Truck Forum.
If the temp gauge is reading colder then it normally does, just replace the T-stat & the PO125 "insuficent coolant temp to enter closed loop" should go away.
Thanks 87 XLT, that is exactly what it is doing. I'll give it a try. Just in passing, would you use a gasket paste on the housing and engine before reinstalling?
Just a quick update for you guys. Replaced the T-Stat and engine temp went right up to normal. It looks as though the gas milage has improved as well, but most of all is that there is heat again to defrost the windshield on these cold mornings. Thanks 87 XLT and all the rest for your help. I'm sure that I will be back again needing help.
