Alright guys, I preparing to put a new 203 thermostate in and do a coolant flush. What is the best/proper method way to do a flush? Any tips or tricks?
well i would start by diconnecting the radiator, and pump sand in the motor through the water jacket, this will allow any rust buildup in the motor to be "sand blasted" away clearing it up... i would also say you should do the same to your oil, add just a bit, about 10 pounds, and that should help clean up and sludge that may have built up over the the life of the motor... let me know how it works for you !
I like to take off the radiator cap and then turn my truck upside down and shake it. O.K. just kidding, really I use a fire hose. No wait, here you go, enjoy: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...=coolant+flush
Fire hose yet another good one. I haven't read plow's link yet but drain the Rad and the two plugs on lower rear left and right side of motor. I think you need to remove the starter to get to one of them.
Farm, don't forget to drain, flush and refill your blinker fluid. You wouldn't want the old stuff to freeze up on you and crack your blinker housing. LOL.
Hey here is an idea. Try a PSD makeover. I have plenty of that good ole' TN red clay around here. You can pack it in every hole in the motor sit it in the jacuzzi for 30 minutes. The put cucumber slices on each injector and get a turbo massage. Then reinstall. Crank over for 30 minutes and then wipe off the remaining clay that didn't get sucked in. Pressure wash the inside of the fuel tank so it is nice and clean ( kinda like a tank enema ) Refill with that new '08 fuel and let 'er rip. Let me know how much HP you get then. LOL
Here it what I do in all seriousness! (I leave for just a few hours and all craziness breaks loose!) Remove the upper hose, pull hte drain plug/petcock on the lower rad tank, pull the heater hose on the water pump. then I use a garden hose to flush the rad thru the upper hose out the drain and thermostat area. Also I pulled the driverside block drain. Then put the garden hose to the heater hose and pump lots of water thru that till it all runs clear. I usually use some compressed air to blow out as much water as I can. reinstalled everything and refill. When I did mine last week I started by adding a gallon of staight antifreeze for the plain water that was in there. then added 5 more gallons of mixed. I used 4 gallons of straight all together with one gallon of mixed coolant left over. I used Zerex G-05 with SCA's already in solution so I didn't need to add any of that.
I think I'm gonna go with the T flush kit as I know my two lower plugs will be a pain and I don't want to touch the starter.
Can I just use tap water for a few days instead of the distilled?
Should I put my new T state in after the last flush?
That T flush kit works great and is cheap. But don't forget to cross all your Ts and dot your I's. Also, try some of that new winshield wiper fluid, it is really cheap, I think it's called H2O or something like that.
Farm69 I forgot to mention (Flame suit on!) I have never used distilled water in any vehicle including my own and I have done many a flushes in my short time.
anyone running a tymar coolant filter on their truck? i almost bought one a few years back. and in all seriousness it catches the SAND that was used in casting and it would catch any extra that you wanted to add for the flush i guess
Distilled water doesn't nessarly cool better then tap water.
If your tap water is really dirty, go to the store and buy regular water.
The impurities in the water help hold heat.
I deal with this a lot in computers. They are always trying to find the best things to use. but in a computer you have to use distilled to keep air out of the system, and other things cause their pumps are sensitive, and you dont want things ubilding up on the heat syncs.
Anyways.
I use the prestone kit on my gasser, i'M sure it will work on the diesels also. It's kinda scary turning your truck on while a hose is blowing water into the motor though, but still kinda neat. Works great, i usually run my truck for a few minutes. 10-15 while it does this.
Cleans it out pretty good.
Useing good antifreeze is an important thing for a diesel I immagine. As for a gasser, not as important. =) I just buy the cheep stuff.
PS - dont forget a hand full of sand in your resiviour to filter the fluid.

Ryan it wasn't a tymar but I had a coolant filter on my 95 and installed it after a really good flush. Ran it for over a year before I sold the truck and the two filters I put on it I cut them open to find them perfectly clean. It had flow but never found anything in it. Many have said they get lots of sand and junk but I never did. On my 97 I am not really sure where I would put it with the IC pipes.
Farm, I use the radiator flush. Just follow the directions on the bottle. Basiclly, drain the system, add water only and the flush, drive it for a day, then do the flush with the "T". Just my $.02.
TJ, you know how it gets with no adult supervision, game on.
