Question Fleetgard or Motorcraft?

I've been using the Motorcraft fl1995 oil filter on my truck, but was wondering if the Fleetgard filter is better. I can get them at a pretty good price, about the same as the Motorcraft. What are your opinions on these two filters?

Both are fine. Buy whichever one is cheaper.

I just did some research. The Fleetguard filter for our 7.3 is the LF3630 for standard applications. However, if you want to upgrade to the LF3974 filter, it contains what is called "Stratapore" technology, which is supposed to provide higher filtration efficiency without sacrificing flow, and do this for longer run periods.

The best deal I can find is a super price on these Stratapore filters - $10.46 each, where some of our site sponsors are selling the same filter for $21-$25 each. Here is the link, for those who are interested or need some new filters. The standard LF3630 filter is $8.42 each from the same site.

Ray, it's not the same filter. According to what I can find:

Purolator makes the Motorcraft oil filters
Baldwin/Hastings makes the Amsoil oil filters
Fleetguard makes the Fleetguard oil filters

Name change for Fleetguard

Available online 5 July 2006.

Fleetguard Inc, a wholly owned business unit of Cummins Inc, has changed its name to Cummins Filtration.

I knew there was a very tight relationship between Fleetguard and Cummins, but did not know that Cummins actually owned them at this point.

I've seen what almost appears to be conflicting information on who makes the Motorcraft filters until you look for which filter is being referenced. For example, the oil filter reference I found said that the oil filters were made by Purolator. Another site referenced Racor for the fuel filter manufacturer of the Motorcraft fuel filters. And then there is always the potential for the references I found to be "out of date" as well.

PSR magazine did an extensive evaluation of oil filters, and the LF3974 was the best, and the Motorcraft FL1995 came in second place. The LF3974 has a 1-micron capability with the same restriction as the FL1995, but I can't remember the micron rating for the FL1995.

The review included dissecting each filter, and some of the others showed very poor construction, with internal piece parts that could come loose and cause big problems. The bottom-line message was to stick with either the tried and true FL1995, or the newer LF3974. I get my LF3974 from Geno's, but I also use an occasional FL1995 from Wal-Mart.

with all my searching I did find some of the info I was looking for
Kuss filtration was the father of fleetguard and stratapore technology and cummins bought the whole bunch
http://www.themanufacturer.com/us/pr...HPSESSID=c88bc
can't find the absolute proof I wanted but stratapore technology I think is basically what amsoil uses for their filters
now to go to friendly navistar dealer to see if they stock the LF3974 filter
