If Martinez had gotten the extra year from the hometown nine...we would have gotten less than two full seasons out of him. Damon...he who looked like Jesus...played like Judas...threw like Mary... ...apears to have broken down tremendously.

Of course Bucholz is entirely unproven...I just used him as a recent example of a productive farm system. Perhaps a better example would have been Youk...or Lester...or Pedroia. Anyone remember Billy Rohr???
Again, to a point. You have to be careful to not define "prime" in terms of peak physical ability. Remember, the Marlins wanted to dump Lowell, probably because some genius there figured he was past his prime and was costing them too much. Yet he contributed to the Sox in 2007 in a way that few if any, rookies could have.

And you can't look at a player in isolation - environment matters. There's a good chance that Damon would have had a much better season if he'd stayed with the Sox than he did with Yankees. When you're building a team, you can't look at players just as stat/age/money based interchangeable widgets...

Point...counter point...touche... ...I know that not everyone gets better with age...as I do!!! I think it's generally accepted in professional sports that your skills decline as you age...the business side of the corporation must establish a policy and stick with it for the most part. I think that the Marlins dumped Lowell strictly because of salary...however...the year they traded him was an awful year for him. The first year with the Saawx wasn't the greatest either...this year was wonderful...does the old adage about hte walk/contract year hold true??? Perhaps. You are absolutely correct...he did contribute in a way no rookie could have...people grow in to that roll as they mature.

As far as Johnny D goes...it is what it is...he played/plays the game hard...injuries were bound to happen no matter where he played. You can't deny that the way he plays took its' toll...the Saawx made the right decision on his contract...I think they are making the right decision on Lowell...if they stick to the three years.

Yup. .<->.

Yes, your *physical* skills wane with age - but my point all along has been that if you just chase youth and physical abilities you're missing valuable skills. People *do* get better with age - experience counts. The combination is killer. Look at the pick-off of Holiday by Papelbon (and Mills) - I can't think of a better combination of experience and execution. The best arm on a player in his prime couldn't have made that play on their own.

Damon plays hard yes. Re: Damon - I think the Sox made the right decision, I think Damon made the wrong decision.
