i heard the new ford diesels have alot of problems with them, i personally like the old ford diesels ,those old ford diesels were bullet proof!
I like the early 7.3 L non powerstroke ford diesels and the early ford powerstrokes, i really like the the 1999 body style it looks real nice to me.Anyways what do you guys think ,give me your thoughts or opinions on the matter. Thanks fellas!
I guess it depends where you go whether or not you hear about a lot of the new diesels having problems, I've heard a lot of good about them and would take one over one of the older trucks any day of the week just to have a new truck
I just ordered an 08 and I couldnt be happier with my decision.
I liked the old body too but I like the new one just aswell. One thing is for sure, the interior of the new ones has come an amazingly long way and I cant say how impressed I am with it.
I just got an 08 F-450. It now has over 5k miles on it and it's a great truck....except the mileage! I get 8-10 on the road unloaded. It has 4.88 gears but this is ridiculous. Ford really dropped the ball on mileage. Edmonds.com has a ton of email from disgruntled owners who get even worse mileage than this. It really pulls loads, but also pulls on my wallet with frequent trips to the pump. They should either fix this or have us line up to get our money back!
looks to me like you got a fair trade. you traded ALL of your fuel mileage for a rear end that will pull a house down the street. 4.88 gears/8-10 mpg sounds about right to me. Now tell the rest of the story...you are very pleased with your trucks ability to out pull everyone else in the nieghborhood.
my F-350 3.73/16-18 mpg....sounds about right to me

It might be more appropriate to give me some help in improving my mileage, rather than making fun. I've owned 6 (F-350's) the last one being an 03 with the V-10. This is the first diesel I've owned. I bought this because people kept telling me they get better mileage and last a long time. I also was impressed with all of the advertising of the new truck by Ford. If I need to replace the gears to a more nominal range instead of the 4.88's, I would be willing to pay the extra money to do so.
Goldman, welcome to FTE and I apologize for the earlier statement on his behalf.
I have a F550 with 4.88's and get 9 towing my Ceder Creek 36 RLTS at 65 mph.
That works out to around 2400 rpm on the tach and I don't like to rev the 7.3 any higher for long periods of time. It pulls like a bull elephant from idle up so no complaints on the power.
The best mileage I can get is around 15 mpg, empty and on a long trip. Otherwise it's about 11-12 around town.
Regearing would help a lot, but I would be sacrificing the pulling power that I enjoy right now, so it's a matter of personal choices.
What do you use your truck for? Knowing that information would be very helpful for us to give you some recommendations.
In response to the original post, I had a 1988 7.3 that must have been built on Friday the 13th. Ford was so ashamed of it, they rebuilt the engine and painted it for free at 85,000 miles. The only thing good about it was the air conditioner (after I fixed the leaks). You could let it idle for a few minutes while loading-up and by the time you got in, you could hang meat in there. I do miss my R-12 freon.
I loved my '94 7.3 Powerstroke and I still love my '03 6.0.
