I want to put a new carb on my 86 f-350 with a 460. I have taken all the smog stuff off of the truck. added a edelbrock performer intake and a new staight up timing chain set. The carb I have on now is a emission carb and is flooding my truck out. I can let off of the gas and it has a ball of fire coming out the exaust and a very strong smell of gas in the engine compartment. I want to put on a carb that is going to work back without any modifications also I have electric choke and want to keep that. I use this truck to pull my camper and go back and forth to work every now and then (20 miles) The engine is stock. Has anyone put a aftermarket carb on with good results and ease of tuning if any tuning for that matter.
I have used Holleys, and have had good luck with them. But the edelbrocks are good carbs too. I liked the instruction book a little bit better that came with the eldelbrock. Both can be ordered with electric chokes. Both are sold in a 600cfm size which is approx what you need. The only fab work you will have to do is the fuel supply line, and possibly a little bit of throttle linkage work. They can be had brand new at a good price at jegs and summit racing.

Scott,
I have an 86 F250, 4x4, 460, C-6, 3:55 gears. I run an Edelbrock Performer. I desmoged mine also. I run a Holley 4160, 600 CFM, on top of a TransDapt SWIRL TORQUE 1" spacer. I added a Quick Change Secondary Housing & run a BLACK SPRING. I use MAXI-JET jets. I run .061. The Maxi-Jets are more precise. I run the stock 6.5 power Valve. I have a Ford Racing 13" open air cleaner running stock paper filters.
The Big difference in what we did was I advanced my cam 4 degrees past TDC. I did this for more torque because I pull a 10,000# travel trailer. It made a big difference. My F250 get 9.5-10.5 MPG empty. 5.5-7.0 towing our trailer.
The 4160 will bolt right on and they are made with Ford kickdown linkage. I see the new Holleys come without float adjustments. I don't know what the advantage is. But on my wife's 88 Dodge D250, 2wd, 360, 4BBL, 4sp, 3:54 gears I run a spreadbore 4175 Holley and it doesn't have float adjustments only once did I have any trouble. That is in a year of running it. I ended up readjusting them. On all 1992 & newer Holleys you don't have to worry about blowing out the power valve because they come with built in protection. One thing your 4180 doesn't have and maybe part of your flooding problems. Any little backfire or bad stumble they blow out the Power Valve PRE 92.
I hope this helps. You can PM me anytime if I can be of any further service. I have been running the 4160 Holley on my Ford since 2003 without any troubles at all.

Sounds like your power valve may be bad if you are using the 4180 Holley. Or the float level is set way too high. Or your choke is way out of adjustment. Or your ignition timing is too far retarded. Or some mechanic drilled out the main jets like one did on mine and really had the air/fuel ratio screwed up. I would just clean and kit the carburetor and install the correct 2-stage power valve for the Ford carburetor p/n and/or Holley list #. Then make sure all the adjustments are correct. Check the float levels first. You can get an aftermarket power valve protection kit.
I just put an edelbrock 600cfm on my truck. I was able to use the electric choke with the original wire, the linkage hooked right up, and the truck has a lot more power. I still have the stock intake too. All I had to do was get some extra fuel line.
