In the last 5,000 miles I have broken two distributor gear pins in my 84 F150 4.9l. After the first one broke the oil pump was replaced. The distributor seems fine, no rough spots, etc. Any ideas what could be causing this. Has anyone drilled out the hole and replaced the pin with a larger one?
what weight oil are you runingin it. and how cold is the temp. where you live. I have heard of people breaking pins while trying to run 20W-50 in the winter. the oil is just too thick in cold weather.
I use 10w40 and the temperature was in the 30s and 40s. Both times the pin broke after driving approx. 100 miles, stopping for gas and then breaking within one mile after starting up again.
I broke mine running 15-40, but also it was pretty cold out.(20 below) I think what else happend was my antifreese. After I broke the pin my engine still ran...hardly(300-6 i think will run on 1 cylinder) but my engine got very hot. It goes to show while gong down the freeway at about 70 my lower radiator hose slushed up. I think between the heavy oil and not have proper coolent circulation caused my pin to break.
The pin in my 85 Bronco dist broke several times. Nobody knew why. Get the proper size drill bit and press the shank end into the hole, make sure its a tight fit, break off the drill bit. Problem solved. It hasn't broke since I did that ten years ago....
