I was at the dealership the other day salivating over the F550 cab/chassis. I noticed you can get a 2 speed rear on them. Is this new or has this always been the case? I have a 97 f-450 2 wheel drive dump truck and it sure would be nice to have a 2 spd rear. Did they make them back then? I wonder if it's something i could find in a juck yard somewhere. This might be just a dream as I bet it would be espensive if I could find one. Thoughts?
Both of my grandpa's dump trucks ('60's models, one might even have been late '50's) had 2 speed rears. I'm pretty sure they've been making two speed rear ends for a long time.
They were available, but I think because of the wider availability of 4WD, there's much less need for a 2 speed rear end. Occasionally, some show up on eBay for a very reasonable price, but you're advised to get something that has parts available.

I know they have been putting them on the larger trucks. My dad had a 57 f-600 with the 2 speed rear. It was great for when you were loaded. Of course the larger trucks still have the 2 spd but i didn't know they had one for the 550. Makes me think i could get one for mine maybe.

Good point about the parts. I would definitly want something that is roughly the same vintage (97ish).
Anybody know who made the 2 speed rears for ford? I've been searching on the web for used rears and you don't see any ford products. Lot's of eatons, fuller, rockwell, spicer, etc. Of course these might only be for the really big trucks. So, maker/Part number anyone? Thanks.
Eaton has been making 2 speed rear ends since the 1930's and continue to make them today. The most popular one Ford used from 1952 thru 1972 is Eaton Model 1350, used on B/C/F/N/NT/T/L/LN500 and larger trucks.. 1952/2008 = there are dozens more, depending on application and rear axle capacity.

Why not get a Klune under drive unit? They say you not to use for a 2wd or for towing
but if a tranfer case will bolt to them then you should be able to put the tailshaft
on the back side of it!! Or just get a tranfer case and tranny and use the low range
in 2wd when you need the extra low gears for pulling out of the pit!!
I have owned and repaired ford trucks for more years than I want to think of and don't remember any single axle trucks from f-5 or f-500 up that didn't have eaton drive axles
even a lot of tamdems were eaton, the rest rockwell

yes especially b/c you can't use 2 spd rear with 4x4, but on older vehicles they are more popular than you might think, I recently had a '75 5 ton with a 390 and 2spd rear...whether it came like that from factory I don't know
