[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Jun-02 AT 06:13 PM (EST)]Sometimes when I reverse out of my driveway, then put it in drive and then try and go forward I get some hesitation, it feels like it's coming from the front of my truck(I.E. the engine or somethign) usually after a second it goes away. One time after putting it into drive and going forward it died. I waited a couple seconds and it started back up again. It's been 2-3 weeks since this happened, and hasn't died again.
This also happens sometimes when I just start it up, like if I am pulling out of a parkign space that I reversed into, and I go into drive and it hesitates as I go forward.
I have the E4OD, i'm not sure if this is an engine or tranny problem.
Sounds like a tuff one to diagnose. It might be an electrical glitch of some kind. I guess you can try all the basic checks to make sure all is ok like plugs, fuel filter etc., Does the truck run fine otherwise like on the highway? Does it do it more in rainy weather?
My stepfather just replaced the fuel filter for me the day I got it(I'm new to cars so he's teaching/showing me how to do it all). We changed tranny filter also coz a gasket was leaking, no leak anymore though.
What do you mean by the basics besides what you listed?(yeah you can tell i'm a newbie when it comes to trucks)
It doesn't seem to do it more in any kind of weather, coz all it has been around here is HOT!!!! But something that i've noticed that i'm not 100% sure about is that when I let it idle a little bit longer than just turning it on and going it doesn't seem to happen. I've only had this happen like 5-7 times in the month or so i've had it.
The only other problem, which I hesitate to call a problem, is that sometimes when accelerating from when being stopped or going up hill that somethign will like gring from the back, but I can never tell if that is the road or a mix of OD kickign in and the road.
I had a good hesitation on my truck Sunday. Its a 88 with 193,898 miles, that was the 1st time I ever experienced that. Wouldn't you know I was crossing 2 lanes of traffic and needed to move quickly. It bogged, like it was running sloppy rich. Immediately afterwards it idled fine and ran OK. The gas was low and I'm assuming it picked up some trash or a little water was in the tank. I just replaced my fuel filter, and know it needs new plugs. The current set has about 50K on them which is long overdue.
Also meant to mention, from what I hear, these trucks wear out U joints fairly quickly, esp the short beds. Its because of the sharp angle from the motor to the rearend. My original Ford U joints lasted about 90,000 miles. So your grinding in the rear, could be a U joint talking to you. I can't remember the cost, but its an easy job and I'm sure is less than $20 per joint.
Last time to add on, I'll quit after this. For my truck its important to allow the motor to go through a little routine that takes about one minute or it'll run real. Crank it up, it immediately idles low, then the motor speeds up for about 30 secs, then it comes back down to a low idle (I'm not sure, but maybe 600-800 rpm). Then it'll run great. Crank up and take right off before it does its thing and the computer will have it running less than great.
