I fully agree the escort was a great car and so is the focus that replaced it. If I recall correctly the Escort was a ford designed shell, but the motor was a mazda design.

That little 4-banger caused the escort to be the best selling vehicle in America for 12 +- years. One reason the Ranger was such a great seller too.

Hey Guys and Girls...
easy on the Toyota bashing... :-) If I read properly, much of the new Tundra was pretty much designed and built here in the US by the folks here. The folks abroad are basically funding the project.

That tailgate problem looks like an easy fix. The first production year model of any car or truck is considered a prototype in my eyes. It's no surprise little oversights like these slip through. You can almost bet they'll have it fixed next model year or the one after.

Just like our F150's--the first year 2004 had lots of problems. You can see the folks at Ford have pretty much addressed them all in the 2005 and much more in the 2006 models. You can bet the 2007's are just about perfect by now. That's why I am never the first one on the block to buy the newest first production year model no matter how cool it is.

I read some statistics in TruckTrend magazine a while ago (I think that's where I saw it) 15% of Tundra's conquest sales were from previous Ford owners... ie., 15% of those sales were from us Ford owners who converted to Tundras. Fortunately in some ways, Ford was the lowest percentage, but it's a sign...

Bottom line for me is the Tundra is just plain FUGLY!!!!! I don't care if it is the greatest truck on earth. To me a truck has to work great and look good. I just can't drive a butt *** ugly vehicle.

My thoughts exactly!!!
I am not trying to bash Toyota with any of my comments here but mach1 has it exactly right.
These plants do employ Americans but the majority of the money goes back overseas. If we would stop buying these "foreign" cars our original US manufacturers would have more sales and the folks working in the Toyota and various other plants could work for Ford or Chevy or Dodge.

I'll agree with you there, and that's the reason I'll probably never own a Toyota truck. I have to like how it looks and the Tundra is one ugly rig.

I'll have to disagree on buying American to keep jobs in the US. Only the "foreign" makers are creating jobs in the US. The domestics are outsourcing and laying people off faster than you can say taco.

Also if you look at domestic parts content, a lot of "foreign" vehicles have more parts made in the US than domestics. For example, last I heard the new Mustang has less US parts than a Camry.

I think we're all preaching to the choir here in this forum.

The reality is we have nobody but to blame but 'ourselves.' Toyota (or anyone else) isn't forcing us to buy their products. It's our choice as the consumer. We as consumers naturally choose the cheapest and best solution that we feel appropriate. Can't blame Toyota for having something that folks consider to be a 'better choice.'

Outsourcing is necessary to be competitive--that's true in just about any industry these days. Even Japan outsources to China keep their products price-competitive. Just look at the back of some Sony A/V equipment these days. Made in China, Phillipines, or Indonesia!

Yeah, that Tundra is big and nice in that regard, but it's ugly...it doesn't cut it for me. I got my eyes dead-centered on the new Superduty next!!
