tire size

Hi Folks,
I tried a search but didn't really find what I wanted to know. Anyway, my '90 F250 4x4 has stock tires/whls (235/75-16?). Can I get by with 285/75-16 without changing anything on the truck? Tis size is about 2" wider and 3" taller than stock (11.5" x 35" +/- a little). It LOOKS like I have plenty of room, think I can do it without any trouble?

Thanks, Dave

They will probably fit, but overall performance will take a hit. What gearing and powertrain does the truck have?

I think you should have lots of room, 285/75-16s are only around 33x11.3. 315/75-16 are 35x12.2 (at least in bfgs they are)

I have no idea........ I believe it's super duty. Does the Vin# tell you anything?

It doesn't see the real road except for short trips to the feed store or some hauling (everything well within 15 miles). My big concern is that it seems the ground is always wet here, and my stock tires can really screw up some surface. Thought a bigger foot would save some topsoil. Or, am I thinking wrong?

Thanks, Dave

Yes.. a wider tire will float on top of the ground better, but try to keep the overall diameter close to stock or you loose pulling power. You will find the axle code on the door jamb, and there should be a tag hanging off the rear pumpkin(under a cover bolt), the bottom row of numbers is the gear ratio.
