Help Me!!!!!please

I have posted before, but to no avail. I am getting some noise from my 03 SD v10. I thought it was spark knock, it was not. I have checked all the heat shields inder the truck and there is only one bolt that seems to be loose at all but isnt metal on metal. The sound is like a metal on metal vibration at one point in the throttle. I can actually hold the throttle at a certain spot and it will contiually make the noise. This only happens at or around 30-40 mph at very low RPM's and only when the truck is warmed up. Whwn I fire it up and drive it doesnt do it????? HELP me please it sounds like crap when it does it but I am not loosing power or anything. I took it to a mechanic friend of mine and he said that it definately wasnt serious sounding, he also said that he had never heard anything like it. It is bothering me. I just got the truck and just want it to quit with the noise already

How is it possible that it only does it at 30-40mph but it won't do it when you drive it?

I think I may have gotten tangled up on some words. when I fire it up and the engine is cold, not hot starts, it will not replicate the noise. Any ideas man

Okay...cold starts; no noise, right?

Cold engine when driving; noise?

Warm engine in park; Noise at certain RPM?

Warm engine in Drive, noise at 30-40MPH; correct?

Did you inspect the plate on the front of the tranny bellhousing?

Do you have an ALL stock exhaust system?

What mods do you have, if any?

What bolt is loose? What does it go to?

OK

cold engine driving no noise

warm engine in park no noise at any rpm

warm engine in drive noise as stated

I inspected all the heat shields nothing seemed excessively loose
as for the the bell housing cover dont really know what I am lookinf for so I cant say that I have checked it. There is some sort of heat shield way up on the underside of the trruck and it seemed that the one closed to the front of the truck had come loose. It seems to be some sort of plastic push pin from what I can tell, but it doesnt seem to be the right material to be making the noise if that make any sense.

This sounds like the inspection cover on the bellhousing, or more accurately, the plate that is between the tranny bellhousing and the engine block.

The inspection cover is wedged under the lower edge of this plate, and produces a nice lovely rasping noise right around the speeds you're talking about.

However, this isn't just the "regular" inspection cover rattle. What you have is the lower end of that plate rattling.

When I removed my inspection cover, it made MORE noise - the plate itself was rattling. A thicker custom cover, some stick-on rubber weatherstripping, and the cover now holds that plate firmly and doesn't make any noise.

I suspect you've got the same thing.

Here's a video clip, the sound is the most important - listen to the raspy noise - anything like yours?

Man I listened to your video...it is hard to tell on the mpeg. I can tell you that my truck wont make the noise in park at any rpm, only in drive at low rpm (1700-2000) at under 40 mph. It only happens at one spot in the throttle. I can hold the throttle steady and it makes the noise continuously. Anything???????????????????????????????????????

Recheck your heat shields. Even though they may not be loose the thin metal can vibrate creating a buzzing noise. My 2008 will do it around 1400 rpm's and I've narrowed it down to the muffler heat shield. One of these days I'm going to remove the shield.

Does anyone actually know why Ford uses so many heat shields? I've been under many Chevy's and Dodge's and they have only a couple of heat shields. Usually one for the cat converter and one to keep the floor pan cool.

That certainly sounds like the inspection cover and engine plate.

On the front of the bellhousing, under the engine, there is a plate with two bolts holding it on. Remove it, and take a test drive - without going through any puddles

It's either go completely away, or get even louder like mine did. Either way, it'll point you in the direction.

Report back!

Because unlike Chevy or Dodge, they don't want to start any fires when off-roading in high grass

Fords are actually used off-road. Lots of times, I've noticed Chevy and Dodge doing things that you would never do with off-road in mind. Air intake placement (brother-in-law's 2007 Dodge 1500 sucked up water and blew a rod out the side of the block after going through a 6" puddle at about 20MPH. Air intake is placed in such a way that water being pushed by the wheels will come up and go right into the air intake). Air breathers on rear-ends not plumbed up to the frame, lots of other things.

Looked under the truck...I am at my aprtment with crude tools keep in mind, I did look but dont really know what I am looking for I am new to trucks. I did see a plate of some kind, there was a bolt missing from the passengers side but I looked and the other was missing as well?? The bolts sre pointed toward the front of the truck. Is theis normal. I did feel kind of loose around the edges, I could push on it. I appreciate all the info and such. Hit me back
