I was told about a 6-12 volt system that you can put on a origianal 6 volt system. the way I understand is it starts off the 12 and runs off the 6. Does any body know the details on this system and where you can get them? Also do you have to change the battery from 6 to 12? Thanks Casey
Welcome, I've never heard of that way but, years ago I converted my 55 I had over to 12v + from 6v - and left the 6v starter and horn. I had to run a volt-a-drop to power wiper and heater and add a ballist to the coil. At 16 that was the easiest way to go to 12v. I did have to get a 12v battery. But I'm sure someone will be along soon who mave know what you mean. Keep askin questions, that way we all learn somthin. Kurt G Y-blocks rule.
There are 12/6 systems but they work differently than you've heard. You convert to 12v (alternator usually) but use either two 6v batteries in series or one battery that has a negative, a 6v pos, and a 12v pos posts. Either way you tap off at the 6v connection to run the stuff that is hard to convert to 12v (heater, wipers usually) and use 12v for lights, starter, etc. It is not a bad setup, except that IMO 6v batteries available today are junk, and not too many people carry the 12/6 batteries, i.e., you could be left hanging while you special order a new one if yours dies.
www.ANTIQUE AUTO BATTERY.com has a 6/12 volt system that starts on 12 then runs on 6.I used it in a 1938 Packard. You can get the battery with the old printting. They are in Hudson Ohio 800-426-7580.I have called them and they where very helpful.I would recomend them.
I forgot to mention that with the antique battery setup you use your 6 volt gen, with a battery that has two 6 volt batterys in one case that fits in your original battery box.
