1999 f150 electronic shift problem

The other day when switching from 2 wheel to 4 wheel hih drive a load bang sound was heard from under the cab. The truck was in 4 wheel drive which was fine for the purpose it was intended for. When the need to switch back it took several attempts of rocking the dash switch to get it back into 2 wheel drive. Now when trying to put the vehicle back into either 4 wheel high or low nothing happens. Found that there is no power to either the electronic 4 wheel dash switch nor the transfer case shift motor. I have heard that Ford has been having problems with tranfer case motors but since I seem to not be getting electric power to either control that before I have the tranfer case motor replaced I'm wondering it could be something else. Also I've noticed that when I first start the truck I'm hearing a click sound from behind the dash . It clicks several times & then stops. Idon't know where to begin to find out where the power supply comes from that feeds these controls.
Also when all is said in done can the the transfer case shift motor assembly, if bad, be changed out by myself or does it need to be done by a Ford mechanic? You can also e-mail me at chassue57@bellsouth.net if so desired.
