tach/overdrive problem

tach/overdrive problem
I am having a problem with my 97 truck. The overdrive light will come on ( dim ) when this happens the tach quits working. It will happen while idleling or while driving.
Any suggestions ??

Ditto. That's a very common problem with the SD trucks for sure. I don't see why ours wouldn't be the same. There is a three wire bundle that goes up the shifter lever. They normally get chaffed and short. When this happens, pops a fuse, loose all instruments, and throttle. Maybe you have a bigger fuse than recomended in that slot, and it won't blow giving you the simptoms you see.

i haev had it happen several times on obs trucks, but it is more common on the newer trucks, i beleive it has to do with the wire location and column tilt angle, it may not be the prob, i have never seen the tach act funny with that one

No, it's about a 20 min. deal. Just remove the panel under the column, then the screws that hold the upper and lower column cover together, and remove them. This is the hardest part. The upper cover is kinda funky to wiggle out of there. But really easy anyway. Then you will see your 3 wires right on top of the column. It's pretty straight forward.
