Angry thats not cool! -e40d

ok so i just went out for a bag of chips(im in a snacking mood)
on the way to the store the truck runs fine and shifts fine, just like allways.
i get my chips, (boy are they tasty) I pull out on to the road, and it doesnt shift it just sits in 1rst like it has no idea what to do. so unitll i get to the top of the hill i just put it in 2n'd.
when i get on flat ground, i put it in neutral turn it off. then back on i put it in drive and it goes directly to 4th, and as soon as i place the shifter somewhere else it just sticks in wherever i put it. no flashing od light tach and spedo work fine.
i got home with no other problems than that, and im gonna finish my snack before i go back out there.
it has done this 1 time before(after the trans rebuild) and that turned out to be a bad ground wire. what should i check?
woo thats a long one!

If you know where that ground wire is, that would be the first place to check, did the shop check it for you the last time it did this?

VSS could still be bad, 1991 has cable driven speedo so the electrics will not affect the speedo reading. Its located at the transmission end of the speedo cable.

In theory, it could also be a dead #2 shift solenoid.

All this talk of chips made me hungry now, think some chips might just do it.

Uhh I had the same problem With my tranny just after I pulled the tranny to replace the Flexplate. It turned out to be the harness connector on the pass. side of the tranny. It had just slipped off the connection. Check to see if your clip[ that holds your connection is still good. If it is broken the tranny will not shift unlless you direct it to..

nope haven't brought it to the shop since the rebuild.
and just now i find out it's done this twice, i'm not the only person who drives it.
so apparently it did this to my buddy too. but i know i drove it later that day and it didn't show any sighns of a problem at all(its nice to know when your friends drive your cars that they will tell you when it has a problem, even if they are a couple weeks late). i guess something must be loose somewhere.
but it's ok its the weekend! i have time to dink around with it.

Check all the trans electrical connections especially the one on the right side with the tin cover, remove the tin heat shield, remove the solenoid connector by pushing on the center tab and pulling up on the wire harness. To install push down until a click is heard. Always reinstall the tin heat shield.

Your looking for corroded, bent or missing pins and water etc.......
