De-icing Running Boards

Now that we are getting some decent snow I have noticed the running boards on our Expy are getting a buildup of ice on them. The outside half of the running boards are "exposed" (for a lack of better term) to the snow and rain fall. Seeing that the running boards are made of some sort of ABS or plastic material what would be the best method of de-icing them? I was thinking of using some ice melt, but I am concerned the chemicals might harm the running boards.

Anybody have suggestions or experience with this?

Thanks,
Brian

I have busted my *** more than once due to this. I thought about adding some form of heating element beneath and wired into in the rear window/mirror defroster.
