2 problems

greetings. I am new to this forum as well as new to the mechanics of working on my own vehicle, so please bear with me. I have a 1986 f150 lariat, but the previous owner put a 1991 Crown Victoria fuel injected engine in.

#1) I can start the engine fine but after a few starts the engine needs to sit for about half an hour before it will turn over.It just cranks and cranks until enough time has passed. I replaced the positive battery cable and am replacing the negative tomorrow, thinking of a bad connection. I've also had solenoid problems in the past. any other suggestions?

problem #2) after the initial start the engine runs high and fast for a minute or so and then slows and tries to die....I have to keep pressing the gas pedal until it finally idles on its own(about 2 minutes). I want to change the fuel filter but do not know the correct fuse to pull. Any suggestions on this or other ideas on what it could be?
Thank you again, and I apologize if I am too vague.

If the engine is turning over, but will not fire, it's not going to be a battery or battery cable problem.

When it will not start, I would take a sparkplug wire off and stick a screwdriver in the wire and hold it next to a piece of metal. While you get someone to crank the engine, check for a spark jumping off the screwdriver. If you have no spark, I would suspect a bad ignition module on the dist.

It kinda sounds like the timing is off, but since the motor was changed I would check the Mass air flow sensor, and check for vacuum leaks in and around the throttle body. If it has an egr valve on it I would also check to see it is partially open. The best way to do that would be to get a good vacuum gauge and pump the egr to see if the diaphragm is moving freely. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Pull the codes from the computer(search) I would start by cleaning the Iac which is
that solenoid deal with the diamond shaped mounting flange and 2 bolts on the side of
the Throttle body. Be sure to hold the solenoid deal up and spray with carb cleaner
to clean the crud from the valve area and do not let any gunk flow in to the shaft hole
of the solenoid motor!! reinstall with some rtv and antisieze on the bolts.
