My friend is the service manager at the local large dealership - he told me (to the side) that the Ford remote start is made by Code alarm and is nothing more than an aftermarket remote start unit that has Fords name on it. He said they work but you can find MUCH better units out there for cheaper.
I had a 2-way EDI (Python) unit installed for $799 at another shop - it does wait for the glow plugs - has a programmable delay to wait.
The remote has a display on it to tell me if the alarm is going off (it beeps); you can see the truck running on the remote, etc..
The Viper systems actually are programmed to wait for the glow plug light to go out before cranking. There is however a tach relay (don't ask me why) that is needed to help with the "warm" (no glow plug) starts.
I paid $300 installed at my dealer by there aftermarket installer/department.I also had them install the optional window up modules in the doors since the unit can handle extra features. They did cost me $280 for all four windows.$580 total and mine also has the delay for the plugs.
I put in an Astro start in my 08 f350, it waits for glow plugs also. The guys also wired it so my heated seats come on automatically as well when started with the remote. They put in a small switch under the dash to turn this option off in the summer. It cost around $550 for parts and labor. It works really well
I would love to know how to make the heated seats come on with the remote start in the winter. There has to be a way to hard wire them (at least the drivers) to an upfitter switch which would then come on with the ignition.
Anyone done this and know which wires to reference?
Mine was installed at the dealer and it uses the factory key fob. Press the lock button 3 times and the remote cycle begins. You can also push the 7/8- 9/0 buttons 3 times and it will start as well.
