My 2005 f350 is getting worse going up hills by missing badly. It seems that if I do not force the tranny to downshift it will miss badly and the turbo almost sounds like it is backfiring. If I press the accelerator and force a downshift I get a huge cloud of black smoke but then it runs great in a lower gear.
Any ideas??? Somebody told me it was a bad PCV valve?

Someone who doesn't know that you may have a turbo going bad? If I'm wrong, one of the more knowledgeable will correct me (please do).
No, I really don't thing it's a PCV... There's no PCV in the 6.0 bible... P
PCM (Powertrain Control Module), 66
Pick-up tube, 23
Plunger, 44
Almost sounds like my 03. It did the same thing mostly going up hills but bucking and sounded the same. Then one day on way home there was a metal on metal noise big cloud of black smoke no power so i limped it to ford they replaced turbo and never had a problem since.
I've always thought the black smoke was good. If you've ever seen a bulldozer working in pushing hard. It usually has black smoke coming out stacked. That means the engine is working properly. Have you checked your fuel filter to see if there's any water in it you said that when you're going uphill is when you have the problem. It's possible that the angle of the truck going uphill is changing the fuel intake out of your fuel filter. Take a look at that. I hope it's as simple as that. Good luck.
I'm going to disconnect the EGR and see if the problem continues. There are extensive articles in this website on EGR disconnecting that are very informative.

well if there is carbon stuck in the pintle unplugging it will not help because it is mechanically stuck open. you can give it a shot though, if you cannot wit tillmoday when it goes in for svc then take if out and try cleaning it if you want to.
I disconnected the EGR valve and have a significant increase in accelleration from a dead stop. I'm not talking about stomping on the throttle but just a gentle push on the accellerator in normal everyday driving. Very obvious and nice to feel. In addition, when going up a hill the truck doesn't feel like it needs to downshift anymore. Prior to this on a long significant hill the truck would start to lose speed but did not downshift unless I pushed more on the throttle. My truck is an 05 with 97,000 miles on it. Tomorrow I'm going to take the EGR out and clean it but before I do hook it up again I will take my weekly 500 mile trip to northern Minnesota and check to see if there is any change in mileage. For the past 2 years it was almost always 17.4 mpg at 75 mph without a significant headwind.

I'll let you all know what I find out.
sounds good, not sure why you are feeling more power but your assometer may be calibrated differentyl than mine.
Could be an injector going bad and causing a power miss.
Take it to the dealer and they can test it . 5yr 100k warranty use it up before its gone.
are you getting decent economy from your bio?? I have often wanted to make my own, but I drive les than 100miles per normal week and the cost was not worthwhile. I may reconsider at the upcoming price of fuel-tax free of course!!

Don't see much differance in mileage with bio but it's cheaper than ULSD.
Look into commerical bio that you can get at the pump.
Truck does run quitier with bio and smells way better than dino .
