Puking Coolant.

Here I go again. Truck at different dealer, different tech, same results. Tech drives my empty F450, can't make it puke coolant, complains I have an aftermarket coolant bottle(coolant filter), then says the degas bottle level was too high, and adjusts it for me! I am not enthused! More later, gotta go catch bus to go 50 miles to get truck. DALEDIESEL,

it is possible it was the degas bottle being too high. If so, the obvious first step would be to lower it to the min line. Tell them to suck it about that coolant filter.

we run the degas almost empty,. they never left enough room for fluid expansion, but when a customer says coolant pukes from the degas i drive them hard on the highway w/ a cooling system pressure guage inline w/ the degas lines-anything over about 10-12PSI can be compression in the cooling system and that means H/G.

Coolant Puke

Guys, thanks for your responses! I just got home from picking up my truck. Disappointed. However, I did suceed in getting them to print me out my 5 page OASIS report. I have now had the same repairs done(add new coolant level sticker, and adjust level) at (2) dealers. I tried to tell the writer that but they are not listening!! Tech states he roadtested truck twice(empty) with pressure gauge on, and could only get gauge up to 16 psi! So that is inline on hose to degas bottle?? Well, I am going to clean up the truck, and clean antifreeze off engine compartment, and put my camper on, and hook up my racecar trailer, and go back down there next week. Tale tech for a ride. Oh, anyone know a rough estimate of how much boost a 6.0s head bolts can handle? 25,30??Or more? Thanks guys! God Bless our troops!! And God Bless our Veterans!! Happy Veterans Day!!! DALEDIESEL is gone!

I always wondered how ya'll knew it was the head gaskets. My truck has been puking and i'm trying to get my truck into the local dealer but they are real backed up right now. Just curious, I installed a coolant filter today and topped the coolant off with the prestone 50/50( it claims it is for all makes and colors), is this incompatible with the motorcraft gold and could it void my warranty?

Btw, i bought the external transmission filter today, $27.00, pretty ridiculous for a small roll of toilet paper. Going to install it tomorrow, but how much trans fluid will i lose and will i need to get some to replace it?

Thanks for the help, I would be lost without this forum and everyones knowledge.

My truck is also puking coolant. Dealer did all the normal easy repairs. EGR/ EGR cooler and new bottle sticker. Truck still whistling and puking coolant.

Seperate question ? When I set SCT tuner to stock, my boost gauge is reading max 30 PSI. This seems a bit high for stock right ? Is there any relation to the whistle or puking ?

DALEDIESEL: Thank you for your support.

Momorris: Get the Motorcraft Gold or the aftermarket Zerex (I think). You should not be mixing colors. GOLD coolant only for the 6.0L. Get a quart of ATF, place new filter in housing, pre-soak filter inside housing, install housing. Add additional ATF if needed.

if he wrote in a story that your truck makes 16PSI in the cooling system then you definelty have compression into your cooling system. the cap is only rated at 15-16PSI so of course it is going to puke. ford says only 10-12PSI is normal in the cooling system.

I do not know how they made it through classes, although their are some guys that they push through because dealers need diesel techs and just because you can pass a class or online test does not mean you are a good tech. some dealerships actually have non certified guys fix some easier problems and use the certified techs number to write the warranty story, shady and we do not do it ever. you guys wanna call my manager and tell him I need some more $$$?? LMAO.

I changed mine Friday night. I measured what came out and replaced it with the same amount. 7 and 3/4 quarts. Make sure you are putting Mercon SP back in. Since what came out was hot, and what I put back in was cold, I was guessing that I would have to add a little more to make up for expansion of the hot fluid. But after getting the transmission hot and checking the level, it was exactly in the same spot on the dip stick.

I also changed the tranfer case fluid at the same time. It takes 2 quarts of Mercon ATF (not Mercon SP).

Puking

Hey all! I loaded my F450 with my camper, and hooked up racecar trailer, and took it for a spin. Ambient temp outside really cool (65) the coolant level in degas bottle since tech "adjusted" it, barely is visible cold with engine off. I ran the crap out of it for 60 miles, and left it running to cool down turbo, and when its hot and running you cannot see any coolant. Had just a slight spatter of coolant on engine. I found a large Ford dealer about 80 miles away, that has a dedicated PowerStroke shop! I am going to make an appointment with them, and try to put this problem to bed! I will let you know. My 2004 6.0 PSD is doing the exact same thing. It makes a whisling noise on deceleration and it pukes coolant all the time...and I don't even tow or haul anything. From what I've read, it's the head gaskets getting ready to blow. Because of the low coolant level all the time, my heat doesn't work properly either.
