Electric Fan upgrade

I would like to share some of my experience and also my mistakes on upgrades that we all have read about. I Have a 93 Ranger 4l Automatic.

Electric Fan:

I have tryed fans from Spal,GM, and Ford. The Spal worked fine but I should have gotten one with the curved blades much quiter. I used their wiring harness with a temp control "t" into my haeter hose. This system has the fan running all the time which you don't need for highway. I also live in Canada (cold and snow)heheh. I used this system for a couple of years but had to be carefull in the hot weather as most of you know. After this I used a Fan form an Ods 98 has its' own shroud but the fan could not keep up in the summer. From researching on other boards I now use the two speed fan from a Tauris. This fan works!! I had bad luck with a control burning up. You should us a control that has avariable speed which allows the fan to run based on temp. There are a couple of good controls out there such as Spal and Flexalite(33054). I am using both to see which one I like. I got the programmable Spal and the Heavy Duty Flexalite for monster fans. Becareful with wiring, also use aleast a 75 amp relay and 40 amp fuse or circuit breaker as this fan draws huge amps on start up.

Thanks for the feedback, based on some real-life experience.

It still sounds to me like an awful lot to worry about in return for marginal (if any) HP gains.

Yeah, the gains would be less than 5 hp peak. I have always been opposed to electric fan conversions, since I just don't think its worth the time money or effort. I just don't think it gives a justifiable return. But it is nice to hear what does work, since I know a lot of people play around with this and don't get them working right.

I'm also using the 2 speed Taurus fan with excellent results - in fact, it keeps the truck cool just fine on low speed even when its 100 degrees out here at altitude, which is harder to cool than at sea level. I'm using the Haynes controller.

The Taurus fan shroud asm. will bolt right inside the Ranger fan shroud, so its actually quite easy to mount!
