broke block

I have a 1984 351W block. When I bought the motor it was dropped and a piece broke off. It is on the right side of the block, the ear that sticks out. I think it is the section where the starter bolts up to. Would it be ok to have it welded back on and build the motor up? I want to make sure it is going to be safe. I figured it would be ok since nothing major is connected to it. I will get some pics posted later, I am at work right now.

starter bolts to the bellhousing.........sounds like you broke the block where the bellhousing bolts.

I have seen it before in a mud truck, ran it for a long time like that......5 bolt bell????
